So I was thinking; what if turtles were REALLY big.

It would be awesome, this is true. But it might also be very useful in a low-tech time period as a mule. Hard shell means the turtle can comfortably carry dangerous weapons without fear of injury as well as being a large, distracting, target to pull aggro while taking very little damage.
